HISTORY OF CLUB TROPHIES By Hazel Webb Club Archivist
This is a History of the Trophies presented to the Society from it’s formation in 1963 by Members Past and Present. Being the Archivist I was asked to compile something of interest and with the A.G.M. coming along in January it seemed the right time.
The Ernie Quinton Memorial Trophy. Spirit of Ecstacy As most of you may know, Ernie, was a very well known character in and around Uxbridge during the 1940’s. He was a man of many vehicles, Rolls Royce, vintage fire engines. So it seemed to him that as there were similar ventures in many parts of the country starting up, he thought it would be just the thing for an Ancient Town like Uxbridge, so a meeting was arranged in the Old Treaty House on 17 July 1963, and the rest is History. This Trophy is awarded for Meritorious Effort. Jack Caswell Cup Jack was a very early Member of the Society and was the proud owner of a 1922, 550cc Triumph Combination which took him the best part of two years to restore. This Trophy is presented to a Non Vehicle Owner. Bill Hodge Trophy. This is a Rose Bowl This was presented in 1965 when Bill left the Committee, where he held the post of Rally Organiser. This trophy is presented for vehicles up to 1930. Calcott Shield This is a very attractive shield and is awarded to Junior Members. Frank Toovey Cup Frank was a leading light in the Society. He was Vice Chairman for many years and played an active part in the running of events etc. until well into his 80th year. This Trophy is awarded to the Best Supportive Member. Sheelagh Hacker Cup. This Trophy is awarded for the Best Vehicle Restoration (Individually). Sheelagh was a long standing Member and served on the Committee for quite a long time. Sadly she passed away in 1983 aged 43 years. Her vehicle was a Morris Ten Six which she restored herself as she was a very competent engineer. Dave Gardner Trophy. This cup was presented by a long standing member Keith Gardner in memory of his father. Vic Bignell Memorial Trophy. For many years Vic was a very active Member of the Society. He was employed by the Post |Office and restored a Linesman’s Van, which he displayed at many shows. He was also our Newsletter Editor for many years. Among his many other vehicles he restored was a Bullnose Morris Pick Up Truck and a Beardmore Taxi, which he acquired and restored after the death of Ernie Quinton. So it seemed appropriate that his Trophy is awarded to the Best Restoration of a Commercial Vehicle. George Mullins Shield. George was a great supporter of the Society and he was a Master Thatcher. He would bring his display along to shows and set light to it, to prove that thatch would not burn unless it collapses. One evening he did this at the Grapes Hotel, where we used to hold our Meetings, it did just that, much to the consternation of the Management, as the lounge was filled with smoke, but all was well as George had great faith in himself. After he passed away we, the Committee, felt it would be nice to have some kind of Memorial to him, so with the help of Jeff Robinson, a couple of Members and myself we went over to Twittenham, George’s home, searched the yard, which was full of old Bedford Lorries and found some very rusty thatching pins. Jeff had a piece of mahogany and he chromed the pins and made the beautiful Shield that is awarded to a Commercial Vehicle owner, possibly a Bedford Man. Roy Hanson Trophy. Roy was a Vellocette owner and also used to travel to Country Shows with a mobile Forge, demonstrating the art of making Iron gates, etc. Although Roy did not seem to have been in the Society for very long I do recall he was most helpful. His Trophy is awarded to vehicles from 1960 onwards. Alan Gino Trophy. This Trophy was originally awarded to the owner of a Military Vehicle but is now presented for American Vehicles. Trevor Pask Motors Trophy. Having been a Member of the Society almost since the Formation, Trevor has in the past served on various positions on the Committee. He has been a great help when needed and still attends shows occasionally. His Trophy is awarded for Cars from 1931 to 1959. The Magazine Shield. I do not seem to be able to find anything in the Archives that tells me who gave us this very nice shield but it is awarded to a Member who contributes articles to the Magazine. Denis Cookson Award. This is a recent addition to our Trophies and Denis agrees that it should be awarded for Public Service Vehicles, Taxi’s etc. After having served as our Chairman for 24 years Denis retired in 2004. For most of those years he was a Committee Member and also in his early days was Rally Secretary for some considerable time. Steve Grundon Trophy. As Steve was a very popular business man in and around Uxbridge, most of you will be familiar with his name. He was a Society Member almost from the beginning as was always ready to lend a hand in one way or other. A great character and a good friend. He restored many vehicles, including am Albion and a Pierce Arrow. Should any Member happen to have a copy of Nov/Dec magazine from 2006, you will find an article there about Steve’s life. His Trophy is awarded for Lifetime Achievement. Brian Winfield Memorial Trophy. This Trophy was presented to the Society in recognition of the many years that Brian served as Meetings Organiser. In the future the Committee will decide on the category for which this Trophy will be awarded, as it is a recent addition to our collection. Charles Tamplin Bell. For people who have lived for any length of time around Uxbridge, there is not a lot to say about Charlie, except for many years he was the Town Crier. He joined the Society almost when it was formed and remained so until he died. His support for us knew no bounds, as was his help in the children’s Wards of Hillingdon Hospital for which he had great affection. It was a great honour, after he died, to have a call from Mrs Tamplin to tell us that Charlie’s wish was that the Society have his Bell, as we had given him so much pleasure over the years. The Bell is awarded at the discretion of the Chairman at the A.G.M. Mascot Engineering Trophy. This Trophy is possibly one of the oldest presentations we have in our Trophy collection. It was given to us by Ivan Hoath who was a Member for many years and was the owner of Mascot Engineering in Southall. It was always presented to the Member with the best turned out vehicle at the Hanworth Carnival, but for the past years the Members at the Auto Show have voted for the Best Vehicle on the Club Stand. In conclusion I would like to say how much I have enjoyed in putting this History together, remembering old friends. Hazel
